@missclairebenjamin: 🚨 Handling dodgy behaviour👇 When someone behaves in a way that essentially throws us under the bus and then denies it when we confront them about it, we can be left feeling powerless. Especially if they say things like we’re confused, or we’re misinterpreting things or we’re not remembering it right (when we know we are). It can be very disorienting and upsetting. It’s one thing to remember something differently to someone else but quite another when someone lies and then makes out our interpretation/ reaction is the problem. This is called gaslighting. Understandably our natural instinct is to argue with them and try to make them validate what we know happened. The truth is this is unlikely to get us anywhere. Someone who behaves in this sort of way is unlikely to suddenly see sense and validate your experience. Therefore there is no point arguing with them as it will just send you down a black hole you don’t want to go down. Practice responding calmly for example: “I remember what happened clearly which is why I’m trying to get to the bottom of why incorrect information was shared” If they continue along the same lines the best thing to do is disengage by saying something like: “Given we have a different recollection of things there seems to be little point in continuing to discuss this. Let’s leave it there” Remove yourself as soon as you can from unhealthy dynamics like this and seek advice from someone more senior/ someone you can trust. 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. So I would have sent out an email with all the receipts and apologize if anyone got the wrong idea during the meeting about what actually went down. Because I'm like that.

Stick up for yourself in the moment during the meeting. “Looks like I sent an invite plus 2 reminder emails, if there was something I could do in addition to that let me know”

In the meeting I would have said, “So the email and two reminders I sent weren’t enough? Noted. Next time I’ll be sure to send three reminders.

I get it but this resolves nothing? This usually isn’t a one off behaviour. How would you handle this going forward especially if they are your line manager

There’s so many of these people out there. But the ending “let’s leave it there” what do you do after that? Otherwise it just feels like you’re the one that has to backing down all the time. 😔

Nah, I'm calling them out directly. Forwarding the invites and reminders on to everyone in the meeting.

This is definitely when you pause and bring in a higher up/third party to mediate. Had to do this only once in my life. Fortunately I had been with the company longer and my reputation spoke for me.

My manager changed the way we all work, it was all agreed etc. I was working to this amended way, and he documented that work not having been completed was my fault… I documented it wasn’t😂

Number 1 rule to remember in these situations is that everyone else in the meeting knows it’s not you.

As much as I think professionalism is a must, it's a shame that this even needs to be taught and it's not common sense on how to be courteous to others.

okay but how does this person address the harm this person caused with other colleagues? is there a way to communicate to others using documentation that the colleague is lying?
