He was detained on January 2, 2016, for allegedly attempting to steal a propaganda poster and was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. Shortly after his March 2016 sentencing, Warmbier fell into a coma from an unknown cause. North Korea claimed botulism and a sleeping pill were responsible.
