the scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where Gene Wilder comes out limping then loses the cane and falls forward into a flip I think was another good example of this cuz it was so silly

In Narnia when Lucy sees Narnia for the first time it's the actresses real reaction because she didn't see the set before that

Never understood this “their real reaction” why hire actors if you won’t let them act according to the script? 🧐

I also feel like it puts so little trust in your actors?? cast different people if you think your current ones can respond in a way that will read as genuine on screen.

I always think of gertie in ET - she didn’t see the puppet before her first scene with it and I feel so bad bc she was so young same with Lucy and seeing Frozen Mr Tumnus in Narnia she was in tears

Similarly, the kids in Goonies seeing the pirate ship set for the first time.

When the scene is supposed to be a surprise to the characters, it's probably not so bad. When it's kept secret just to avoid spoilers (like the MCU), it doesn't add to the performance at all.
