Dorothy Lutz was murdered on February 3, 1932. Dorothy and her family lived in a neighborhood made up of creaky, one-room rowhouses, damp hallways, and dimly lit courts. On the morning of February 3, 1932, Dorothy left her home to play outside, and vanished. The tight-knit community was thrown into alarm. Neighbors searched the area, police checked other houses, and local stores asked customers if they had seen Dorothy. But no one had. For five days, all of their efforts failed. On February 8, 1932, two patrol officers stumbled on a body in the upstairs bedroom of an abandoned house just blocks from the Lutz residence. Dorothy’s small body showed clear evidence of a brutal attack. She had been choked to death, but there were also signs of a prolonged struggle. Her throat, hands, and arms were bruised, and it looked as though she had been violently manhandled across the room by someone in a fit of rage. There was also evidence that she had been sexually assaulted. Under her lifeless hand, police found a signet ring with the initials “D L V.” Investigators also noted footprints on the roof leading toward the property and over skylights. Seven strands of hair, long and straight, were clenched in Dorothy’s fist. Four days after Dorothy's body was found, police arrested a 16-year-old boy named William “Willie” Brown. He had been seen with Dorothy days before; the ring was allegedly identified as his by neighborhood kids. Under intense police scrutiny, Brown confessed to attacking and murdering Dorothy. He was indicted for first-degree murder, despite vehement objections from his defense that his confession had been coerced and forced. At trial, it was revealed Dorothy had been choked, but prosecutors also cited the hair and potential eyewitness evidence. Critics who doubted Brown's guilt were quick to point out inconsistencies, notably the hair found in Dorothy's hand. Because the strands of hair were long and straight, they did not match Brown, whose hair as a young African-American boy, was completely different. This cast even more doubt on the validity of Brown's

This cast even more doubt on the validity of Brown's "confession," and sparked debate about a potential abuse of power from the police department. Despite these glaring issues, the court ruled that Brown's confession would stand. On April 2, 1932, after deliberating for 71 minutes, a jury convicted Brown of first-degree murder and sentenced him to die in the electric chair. During the penalty phase, the jury noted three aggravating circumstances: the murder occurred during the commission of a felony (sexual assault), the murder involved torture or extreme cruelty, and the victim was a child under twelve years old. Brown appealed, but the sentence was upheld. However, nineteen days later, a panel of three judges heard Brown's confession after he was granted a new trial and pleaded guilty. In return, his sentence was commuted to life in prison. Dorothy was 7 years old. According to cemetery records, she is buried in this unmarked grave. #grave #cemetery #mausoleum #graves #cemeteries #cemeteryexplorer #cemeteryexplorers #famous #famouspeople #famousgraves #famousgrave #graveyard #gravephotographer #gravestone #gravestones #taphophile #taphophilia #celebritygraves #murder #truecrimetok #murdervictims #murdervictimsawareness #unsolved #unsolvedcases #unsolvedcasefiles #unsolvedcrime #unsolvedcrimes #truecrimetiktok #truecrime #truecrimecommunity #truecrimetok
