What exactly is hybrid training, and is it not the same as just “regular fitness” or “strength and conditioning“ or “we just call that working out”. Hybrid training isn’t just “being mediocre at everything”. It’s about intentionally trying to be your best at multiple forms of training or sports. You’re compromising max potential in individual areas, to be your “max best” at multiple at once. It’s hard to measure and quantify when it also can be self defined or there is no set competition. Hence, the memes. Where concurrent training, which overlaps a lot with hybrid training (hybrid training IS a form of concurrent training) is trying to balance multiple modes of fitness in the same training day, week, block or cycle. But the difference is you are using one as the main goal, and the other as complimentary for general fitness or preparedness all around. The balance favors ONE specific sport or outcome. This is a lot more like traditional strength and conditioning. Arguably and in my opinion — everyone should be doing some sort of training that is hybrid or concurrent. For health and performance. Hybrid IS health. And how people self identify or not doesn’t really matter. Call yourself a hybrid athlete even if you favor one thing. Say you hate hybrid training and it isn’t real and is just normal fitness, then go get your kicked and come back and let us know how it goes. OR be an elite freak who says it’s “just working out”. But the nuances here helps us understand: what is the main goal and outcome? What is someone trying to get from their fitness and performance? Hybrid or concurrent, which every word or bucket it applies to doesn’t really matter. We’re trying to balance both and can pull from training principles in these domains here to help us be our best, at whatever our goal(s) are. Do your cardio. Lift weights. Jump. Sprint or go hard. Run. Play. Move.
