Two were sentenced to five years in a penal colony, four to compulsory labor. The criminal case was launched after an undercover informant spent 19 months feigning grief and baiting the Witnesses into religious conversations while she secretly recorded them. Defendant Darya Petrochenko — who worked as a chief specialist at the Ingushetia Representative Office under the President of Russia in Moscow and is now sentenced to five years — described her interactions: “I genuinely wanted to support a person who had supposedly lost a loved one. I asked nothing of her, nor did I offer her anything … I caused no harm to her or to the constitutional order.” The UN Human Rights Committee has directly stated that Russia's prosecution of Jehovah's Witnesses is “discriminatory on religious grounds.”
