@a2bbiking: Whipping your bike is one of the most stylish and fun techniques you can learn while jumping. Whipping side is a personal preference and depends on your lead foot. Most people prefer to push their whip in the direction of the rear foot. But it also comes down to a few other factors like how you set up for the takeoff, turning your bars into the whip, your hips opening, and legs pushing. An important thing to understand about whips is that on your upward trajectory, you should focus on whipping (Stepping the bike out) and while on your way down, you should be focussing on straightening the bike out. This leads us to step 1 Step 1 - Choose the Right Jump: Start with a tabletop or a jump with a smooth, predictable takeoff and landing. It’s best to practice on a jump you’re comfortable with and one that has a gentle landing slope to help you get the hang of the whip. Step 2 - Approach with the Right Speed and create a slight curve up the lip: Ride towards the jump at a moderate speed—fast enough to get some airtime, but not so fast that you lose control, you need some time in the air to actually complete the whip. As you approach, get into a low, balanced stance with your knees and elbows slightly bent. Ideally trying to create a curve to start your whip going into the jump Step 3 - Preload the Bike: Just before the takeoff, push down on the bike by compressing your body and the suspension. This preload helps to generate lift and makes the whip more dynamic. Step 4 - Initiate the Whip: As you take off from the jump, turn your bars into the direction of your carve, and open your hips into that direction. Aim to push the back of the bike out with your foot closest to the back of the bike. Step 6 - Control the Whip in the Air: While airborne, use your core muscles to maintain balance and control the whip. You don’t need to push the whip too far—start with small movements and gradually increase the angle as you get more comfortable. Keep your eyes focused on the landing. Step 7 - Bring the Bike Back: Start by straightening up your front wheel and letting it land first, this will help pull the rest of the bike back underneath you. As you near the landing, use your legs and hips to pull the rear wheel back in line with the front wheel. Step 8 - Land Smoothly: Land with both wheels evenly on the ground, absorbing the impact with your legs and arms. Aim to land smoothly and in control, ready to continue riding. Step 9 - Practice and Refine: Whipping takes practice to master, so start small and gradually increase the size of the whip as you gain confidence. Tips: Start Small: Begin with small whips to get a feel for the technique before attempting more aggressive movements. Stay Relaxed: Keep your body relaxed and fluid, avoiding stiffness, which can throw off your balance. (Especially to avoid getting high sided) Engage Your Core: Your core plays a key role in maintaining balance and control while airborne, so keep it engaged throughout the whip. Use Your Eyes: Look ahead to your landing spot rather than down at your bike, helping you maintain control and prepare for a smooth landing. #mtb #mountainbike #mtbtip #mtbtips #whip #mtbwhip
