Dissonance is at play when an unfaithful spouse hears about other unfaithful spouses being discovered, but doesn’t believe the same fate will befall them. Feeling like we are able to control the narrative is a part of an affair. The story in our own minds, and the dissonance that allows us to make choices that we’d be horrified if they were revealed, is what allows the affair to take on a quality that’s outside of the person having it. It’s as if another person is having the affair. We must act as if we aren’t, which makes it as if we aren’t. It’s part compartmentalization, part denial, part deception, part defense. Playing it off is often a part of the affair. But continuing this state does leave affair discovery as a possibility. And when an affair is discovered, chaos ensues. And living in a state of cognitive dissonance is unhealthy…. For everyone.
