Having people over is ordinary, it happens every single day all over the world. Lots of them are boring or infuriating or chaotic, but the rare ones are satisfying and memorable or even life changing. Every time I host, I learn something new that I like or dislike and vow to change or incorporate in the next one. We had a big dinner this week of 12 of our couple friends, and I needed a game as a distraction while washing plates to use for dessert(who has space for that many dishes?) My wife came up with a game she called the paper turkey. It had strict rules, and I assumed that would make it boring. I was so wrong. We gave every guest a blank sheet of paper and asked them to make a turkey, but they couldn’t use any cutting implements(only their hands) and then they must present and explain their turkey to the group. It was hysterically funny and showed each individual’s creativity and personality I loved it so much. My rules of hosting: Always try very hard to make people feel a sense of belonging, generosity, and flattery. Never take your food or decor too seriously, keep a handmade or relaxed vibe. Let the snobbiest/most opinionated guest DJ the music(but never relinquish control of the party to a guest), and make decisions so they don’t have to. Always cook something Cajun. Always assign seats and make sure strangers sitting next to each other have something in common. Make sure everyone leaves early ish because you have an introvert wife, and never have more than 12 people over at once. 😂 What do you think of my rules and do you have any of your own? I was recently recommended a book called The Art of Gathering, and I put it on my list immediately and can’t wait to read. PS: BotterMëllech is the same as buttermilk.
