The Noid was a Domino's Pizza mascot that became a household name in 1986 after the debut of his successful commercials. However, the Noid's story took a dark turn in 1989 when Kenneth Lamar Noid, a mentally ill man, entered a Domino's in Chamblee, Georgia and held two employees hostage for over five hours. Noid believed the "Avoid the Noid" campaign was directed at him and was antagonizing him. He was armed with a .357 Magnum and claimed that the Noid mascot was created to mock him. Noid was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, and theft by extortion, but was found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to a mental institution. The incident resulted in bad press for Domino's, which scaled back their marketing of the Noid. Noid spent three months in the institution and eventually committed suicide in 1995.
