In NSW a car is automatically written off if the air bags deploy in a crash, even if it's only minor damage. I'd wager it's because they don't want people repairing "written off" cars themselves.

Cause a car is totaled 90% of the time if the airbag deploys, mostly cause it cost sm in labor to replace, they limit sales to stop insurance fraud

well I wouldn't trust anyone to change my airbags unless they were a registered mechanic, so it makes complete sense to me

I had to look up "are airbags explosives" and yeah they have a chemical in them that is used to help deploy the airbag quickly lol no idea how someone could use that in a meaningful way (pranks?)

airbags have a small amount of explosives/ignitable materials which can be dangerous if you're not trained to handle them. plus a safety measure to ensure you aren't swapping them in a totaled car 👍
