#MovieReview #A Real Pain 🍿🍿🍿🍿1/2 (Out of 5) Excellent Relationship Story – A Wonderfully Directed Film I was impressed and had no idea Jesse Eisenberg produced, wrote, directed and starred in this film. When I left the theatre I was impressed with the film overall and after I learned what he did both behind and in front of the camera – I was that much more impressed. The story begins with mismatched personalities and recent reunion after a lengthy separation, where cousins David (played by Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (played by Kieran Culkin), charter a tour through Poland to honor their grandmothers’ wishes after her death. Their adventure becomes emotionally complicated as old tensions resurface, the past catches up with them while meeting new international friends and learning how to explore their own, not so perfect, family history. Eisenberg and Culkin are brilliant together. Their depth of concern, humor and genuine affection (and angst) for each other is palatable. Their touching performance are wrapped in culture, history and sprinkled with crass and fun humor that leaps off the screen in a true realistic fashion. Will Sharpe plays the young English tour guide who gives an amazing insight to all of the travelers from around the world and puts a lot of the cousins issues in perspective for both of them. Jennifer Grey plays of the tour goers who plays a smart and open enthusiastic who gives the cousins a unique point of view to look at from their perspectives of their own family and the dramas that exist. Both wonderful. The beautiful scenic cinematography by Michał Dymek and smooth editing by Robert Nassau made the film warm and enjoyable with a very good pace and just enhanced the performances to a very touching emotional ending. This is how films should be made. Story first. Casting second and photography (and editing) done with clean static artistry and logic. I loved this film for all the performances wrapped in this family bonding story. “A Real Pain” is a very good film if slightly slow in a couple parts.
