Here are some of the things I look for: 👑Authenticity - where there’s a corporate & local option in the same place, I’ve found the service and people to be better at the latter 🛠️Infrastructure - choose the hostel with the services you want/need, (kitchen, WiFi, meal service, towels, sheets, pool, excursions, shuttles, etc.) 🌊Proximity - a tight race between hostels can be decided by which is better located relative to what you want to do 🔊Reputation - travelers and hostels know the next best hostel for where you’re headed, trusting them is a great way to vet somewhere 🤯Something that surprised me: Even if you have the budget to stay at a hotel, hostels bring a far greater social environment to the travel experience.
