Intimacy without responsibility...Misyar Marriage Misyar marriage, sometimes referred to as "travellers marriage" or "marriage of convenience" is a (temporary) marital contract with the condition that a spouse gives up some of their marital rights. Generally, it involves a woman foregoing her right to financial support, housing and/or the equal division of nights between co-wives. Misyar marriages are a controversial arrangement in Middle Eastern countries where Muslim men contract a misyar nikkah to legitimise intimate relations with a woman, oftentimes without the knowledge of their wives. Some Muslim jurists permit misyar marriage, others have strongly condemned it as a type of prostitution. Sadly, misyar marriages are carried out by "practising," religious Muslim men who target and exploit vulnerable women in poor countries. In recent times, a number of prominent public figures, Islamic speakers, and religious scholars/students have engaged in a misyar marriage, which usually ends in divorce. It must be emphasised that there is no mention of misyar marriage in the Qur'an, hadith and classical books of fiqh. It is a recent phenomenon to legitimise intimacy but free husbands of the financial obligations and responsibilities of traditional Islamic marriage.
