To be fair in New England out hikes are basically vertical rock scrambles. Switchbacks don’t exsist here 😅

There’s also a big difference between the trails. West coast is v planned and gradual elevation gain. East coast is straight up.

Would you consider Mt. Fuji difficult? About 4826ft?

I’ve hiked nearly every state in the country. Never hiked anywhere harder than NH/ME.

Perhaps a challenging hike is about more than just elevation gain.

Go north to Vermont! The presidential in a day will absolutely be challenging enough at 23 miles and ~8500 ft of elevation with basically no switchbacks (and I currently live in Colorado)

Old Rag has 1210 elevation gain. Billy Goat trail is tough because it's all a rock scramble not necessarily because it has a lot of elevation. Also we don't believe in switchbacks

I moved from DC area to California. The trails you talk about here are rocky and/or just go straight up. Out here so many of the trails are well graded and gradual.

Hike the whites. Check the weather and pack accordingly
I don't know how to compare the two though... No switchbacks but not at high altitude

I took a NJ BF to the gorge and he wanted *2 REST DAYS* after the easy Oneonta loop... which I chose bc it was easy!

I’m too old for this :
West Coast mountaineer here, now living in DC. Nothing compares. However it should be noted that switchbacks don’t exist here. So a 1,000-foot gain on the AT goes straight up.

You gotta go out west a couple hours to the Appalachians. Old Rag is a 2,300 foot climb.

I live in NY and I would consider those easy hikes. The hardest day trip hike I’ve done in NY was about 9k ft total in elevation gain. (Multiple peaks in one day)

If you want to hike truly close to DC, yeah Billy goat which is more like a very challenging nature walk, is the best we’ve got, but if you go west to the Appalachian mountains, we have options.

Come to Illinois! Our hiking trails are former rail lines and the lake shore. Elevation change zero.

Heck I’m from Illinois which is flat as a pancake and I would consider those easy hikes so idk what those recs are about. Try Maine, NH, Vermont. White Mountains are challenging.

So you’re saying I need to move to VA? I can’t handle more than like 1k elevation gain anymore and that’s hard to find in WA.

Little devils stairs up an old waterfall and old rag are fun and challenging. The are steep and rocky and it’s fun

Ah yeah, remembering that challenging hike I did in the cascades that was nearly 4000ft elevation gain 😭😭
