@sheldricktrust: Giving an elephant a lift! Even here in Kenya, where we are fortunate to have elephants, it’s not your average sight: A 6-tonne bull elephant being transported down the highway! This particular individual was being translocated to KARI Ranch, an area under our protection, having just received lifesaving treatment from our SWT/KWS Tsavo Vet Unit. It all began with the discovery of a single – enormous – tusk, which members of a community found just lying on the ground. It was reported to KWS who collected the tusk and began patrolling the area. They requested aerial support, which we provided and our pilot successfully spotted a large bull with a single tusk. He also sighted a big hole in the bull’s cheek, above where the now missing tusk would have been. We started to put plans in place for a treatment, the urgency of which escalated when the elephant knocked over a member of the community. So it was that our treatment grow into a translocation.
