In medicine, we’re often taught to use race as a prognostic factor, which can lead physicians to miss a patient’s diagnosis. Sarcoidosis is thought often thought of as a disease that is only in Black, female patients. But it’s ancestry, not race, that predisposes patients to certain conditions! Someone may have African ancestry and not even realize it. It’s important not to conflate the two.
