@drjaleelmohammed: Citalopram and escitalopram are both antidepressants that belong to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class, but they differ in their chemical composition and effects. Citalopram is a racemic mixture, meaning it contains two enantiomers: the S-enantiomer and the R-enantiomer. Escitalopram, on the other hand, is the purified S-enantiomer of citalopram. The S-enantiomer is primarily responsible for the antidepressant effects, making escitalopram a more potent and targeted treatment. As a result, escitalopram often requires a lower dose to achieve the same therapeutic effect as citalopram, potentially leading to fewer side effects. Additionally, escitalopram may have a faster onset of action and is generally better tolerated. #lexapro #celexa #ssri #antidepressant #medication #MentalHealth #psychiatry #psychiatrist

So why would citalopram be prescribed if escitalopram is generally safer and has a quicker consent?

I had a HORRIBLE experience with Lexapro. My anxiety was off the charts and I couldn’t adjust. Even over a week.

I used to be on citalopram and it made me throw up and my skin tingle, then I got crazy brain zaps when I stopped taking it even with tapering the dose. I take bupropion now and it’s sooo much better

It’s the S-enantiomer which is why it’s named escitalopram. ❤️
