My parents always said We won’t be here forever, your children & siblings will have their own families. Your spouse is your family through it all so pick someone who will be in all the phases for you

This is great advice and I HAVE to share my experience - this is why I broke up with my ex of 5 years. My mom died while we were together and he was AWFUL - I left him right after she passed.

Yes. My husband and I became much closer when my dad was dying. Now that my mom is aging I watch him mow her lawn and care for her and her home with out being asked. He’s a good man.
