MARCOS (Marine Commando Force) are the Indian Navy’s special operations force, formed in 1987 and specialised in maritime, littoral and amphibious operations but capable across land, sea and air. Their motto is “The Few, The Fearless.” Origin & history Started as the Indian Marine Special Force and later re-branded MARCOS to give the unit a distinct identity. They were created to give India a professional maritime special-operations capability (counter-terrorism at sea, ship boarding, amphibious raids). Roles & core capabilities Maritime counter-terrorism and ship-boarding (VBSS — visit, board, search & seizure). Amphibious raids, direct action, reconnaissance and sabotage (including underwater demolition). Counter-piracy and maritime security (notably in the Gulf of Aden). Special reconnaissance, airborne insertion (HALO/HAHO), combat diving and operations launched from submarines. Urban counter-terrorism and hostage-rescue (including responses to maritime-terrorist scenarios). Selection & training Volunteers come primarily from within the Indian Navy (officers and sailors); selection is extremely tough — dropout rates exceed 80% in basic courses. Training is multi-phased and includes combat diving, parachuting, small-boat operations, amphibious warfare, demolition, EOD basics, close-quarters battle (CQB), jungle and mountain warfare, intelligence tradecraft and advanced weapons. Organisation & basing Exact strength is classified (open estimates range from ~1,200–2,000), and MARCOS operate in small, highly mobile teams staged from naval bases and warships. Headquarters elements and training centres are located at naval facilities such as INS Karna / training at INS Abhimanyu and diving training at Kochi. Notable operations (publicly known) Operation Pawan (Sri Lanka, 1987): early operations where they carried out amphibious and harbour raids. Kargil War: specialised roles supporting operations in difficult terrain. 2008 Mumbai attacks (Operation Black Tornado): MARCOS were one of the commando units involved in clearing the Taj and Trident hotels. Multiple anti-piracy actions in the Gulf of Aden — boarding and retaking merchant ships from pirates. Evacuations and hostage operations: e.g., interdictions at sea and reported involvement in sensitive high-profile recoveries. Because many MARCOS missions are classified, public reporting covers only a subset. Equipment & platforms Typical special-forces small arms, suppressed weapons, breaching gear, combat divers’ rebreathers, fast-insertion RHIBs (rigid-hulled inflatable boats), inflatable para-drop boats (“duck drops”), and specialised parachute and dive rigs. MARCOS deploy from ships, helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and submarines as mission needs dictate. International cooperation & exercises MARCOS regularly train with foreign special forces (e.g., exchanges and joint exercises with US Navy SEALs and other partner forces), improving interoperability and exposing troops to varied tactics and equipment. Public controversies & limits A number of MARCOS actions are politically or legally sensitive (cross-border raids, covert captures). Because many missions are covert/classified, independent verification is sometimes hard and reporting can be fragmentary. #news #fyp #marcos #foryoupagе #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp
