@aleks.london.diary: Have You Seen Harrods’ Egyptian Escalator Yet? 🏺✨⁣ ⁣ In 1997, Mohamed Al Fayed, who was then the owner and chairman of Harrods, commissioned the Egyptian escalator from William Mitchell, his long-standing design adviser and a renowned sculptor. ⁣ ⁣ Sitting at the very core of the building, the escalator hall teleports Harrods’ visitors to the luminous world of Ancient Egypt, with its bright tones of yellow, brown and green, and its millenary semiotics. ⁣ ⁣ Beneath the assorted depictions of warriors on the top friezes, on one of the walls is an imposing bas-relief of a pharaoh figure, sitting on his throne and wearing a pschent. Next to its profile, two lines read:⁣ My name is Ozymandias, king of kings.⁣ Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!⁣ ⁣ Images of pharaohs with the visage of Al-Fayed still stare down on visitors as they head up. ⁣ ⁣ Speaking of escalators, London’s first escalator opened at Harrods in 1898.
