These are short-day onions. They mature faster than long-day onions. I started seeds indoors in January. I transplanted them in early March. Harvest: Early July. Approximately 90-100 days of maturity Variety: Texas Grano, Madalyn When to harvest onions: 🧅 For the full mature-size onion, once the tops flop over and the necks become soft and turn a brownish color; also, the bulbs pop out from the soil, which means they are ready to be pulled. And you have a 1-2 weeks’ window to harvest the onions. Unless the weather conditions like rain, you may want to harvest them before the rain hits because it causes rotten onions and makes onions not store well. ☀️ Harvest onions on a dry day. You can twist the onions, then pull them out, or use a hand shovel to help loosen the soil before pulling it, and then sun-cure for at least 2-7 days, depending on your climate. I let my onions, sun, and air dry in an open space since our current weather is cool and there is not much sun, so direct sunlight will not hurt them. 🧅🔥🥵 If you live in the hot summer heat, I recommend drying/curing them in the shade with much airflow to prevent them from burning. ✅ After that, locate the onions that are dry, cool, and have good airflow to finish the curing process, which could take about 5-7 weeks or longer. Store onions in a dark, dry, airy, cool place. Ideal temperatures are 45F-55F. I just left mine in the garage. ⏳ How long can onions be stored/last? Well, it depends on the variety you are growing. Some varieties can store longer, and some store shorter; for example, sweet onions can be stored for 6-8 weeks. And some pungent onions can be stored for 8-10 weeks. It depends on your preference that you are growing for the flavor or long-term storage. You can also transform onion into onion powder or cut them, then put it in the freezer for later use. My irrigation is from Garden In Minutes. If you’re interested in using Garden Grid in your garden, you can check them out @Garden In Minutes Gardeninminutes.com And here's a cool thing - you can use the code “Nita” to save 7% off your purchase! I hope you find this video helpful. #onions #onionharvest #backyardgardener #gardening #growingyourownfood #backyardgarden #growwhatyoueat
