The simple answer. Inputs are voltage getting sent back to the plc from some type of switch and outputs are voltage getting sent from the plc to things like coils on motor starters.

I think of inputs as information I'm receiving (on, off, closed, open, temp, pressure, etc) and output as an action (motor, light, heat, actuators, etc)
