@daywithmei: Trader Joe’s Calamari in Olive Oil 🦑 Tinned Fish Talk After 4 months of waiting the West coast TJs finally have the calamari in stock. I tried this for the first time at the tinned fish picnic last weekend right next to the Jose Gourmet spiced calamari in ragout— not a fair matchup. Here’s my thoughts after tasting it alone: Taste 🦑 Squid is generally pretty mild to me so this was precisely as expected. It even has less of that ammonia odor than some other squids I’ve tried. The sodium level is reasonable, leaving room to add seasonings. The olive oil is a blend of refined olive oil and extra virgin altogether mild as well. Texture 🦑 In the spectrum of canned squid this falls somewhere in the middle. It requires some chewing, though I think of it as more meaty less rubbery if that makes sense. Price 🦑 $3.99 for 110g. The Matiz squid with white beans and Jose Gourmet calamari in ragout are inarguably more delicious, but come in at much steeper prices over $10. Go cheaper and we have Goya, Vigo, and the like, but the texture is more rubbery imo. I’d definitely pick this up again, there’s no better value option.
