The fact is even in places with trains and subways we still really like using cars, it's nice having heated seats, choosing which songs to blast, kinda like a mobile mini home

I think a mix of public transport and cars would be a good solution. Your point on “being in control” and “how fast I’ll go” are problems though. It’s precisely giving control of 2 ton death machines

When I travel I do enjoy visiting remote parks and trails and such. How am I supposed to get there with no car. There’s too much America for a train or even bus system to cover.

I’d be totally fine with a better public transit system. I LOVED the public transit option living in Los Angeles, but that’s same stucture is abysmal in rural areas (especially the Midwest).

If we had an affordable train system that is fast I would travel back home to visit family more. I hate driving 25hrs to go visit family, more so as I've gotten older.

Japan has some of the greatest car culture in the world, I don’t think it’s that. Its walkability. When I lived in PDX I loved public transit, but in MI I’d rather drive than get on a bus.

As someone who grew up in/around D.C., I much prefer Public Transit. But I think a hybrid system that encouraged Public Transit would be better.

American here and I live in a smaller city and I exclusively use the buses and trains to get to where I need. Driving culture doesn't take into account those who can't drive and refunding transit 1/2

I lived in countries with "excellent" public transport, including a few in Europe. Still chose to have a car, comfortable, cold AC, heated seats, keep my things in there, don't have to rely on where the train/subways go.

I think one of the reasons Japan is so easy for people to visit is because of its public transportation. You can do so much without renting a car.

I would use trains for longer distance travel if it was more convenient than the train I have access to now in the US. If I lived somewhere more bikeable I would bike more than I do now too

I lived in Chicago for 4 years. It was car or CTA. I chose CTA. It saved me money but wasn't always the easiest way to get anywhere. As soon as I moved back to MI, bought a car

I do wish we had more reasonable rail options for intercity travel in the US, but it would be impossible to adequately serve this whole country with public transportation. It's so big.

I have been to London, Paris, Italy, and Germany, and they have excellent PT. And I loved using it in the cities. But I wouldn't have seen some of the coolest stuff if I had been only the trains.

Road trips are fun, drove to the mediterranean last year, kept it to 6/7 hours per day, but most driving is just commuting isn' it, in a car that is boring and tiresome, in PT it can be quite relaxing

Yeah bro, but USA could easily build a TGV level cross country train w 300 miles/h speed and cars can’t even go half. In every hour it goes then a lot would choose it for long distances.

America structurally can't have European transit systems. it's built around the car and that's path dependent. everything is too spread out for it to be efficient.
