2004 was the first election I was really cognizant of and I didn’t realize until recently how close it was. Like 2016 and 2020, if ~40,000 votes in a few states go the other way Kerry would have won!

And let's not forget the major reason Bush won the popular vote in 04 is cuz the precedent at the time was as a country you stand behind and give bipartisan support to the president during wartime

If that trend was reversed The electoral college would be gone cause Fox and right wing media would scream about it 24/7 and their base voters would demand change. They would yell fraud and attack system. Dems shrug and say oh well, that’s the constitution.
