@missclairebenjamin: 🚨Handling the “needy” one👇 When you’re managing someone and it feels like they aren’t showing initiative and come to you looking for support with what seems like every little thing it can start to feel exhausting and draining. Everyone is different and some people need more reassurance and support to feel confident in their own decision making. It’s hard not to get frustrated & criticise but it’s important to try and avoid this and instead try a different approach to help shift the dynamic. As managers sometimes we unintentionally contribute to the dynamic because when our team member comes to us with a problem we tell them the answer instead of helping them become more confident problem solving independently. Whilst this is well intended it can mean that they do not develop their own problem solving skills. I’d recommend using a coaching approach to build their confidence and help them feel safe making decisions more autonomously. This may also require you to release some control which can take practice. These are both powerful questions: 1️⃣ What do you think would be a good approach? 2️⃣ How did you approach a situation similar to this in the past? Be sure to encourage their self- belief and keep a watch on your own desire to always tell them the answers. Over time you should start to see a shift in their confidence. 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Therefore please use your own judgement when using this advice and adapt it to suit your situation. You’ve got this 💪 💬 Have you ever been on either side of this situation? I wouldn't classify myself as needy. When you have been degraded, controlled, and criticized, it's hard to trust your instincts.

If I did it on my own initiative she would say I should have asked, if I asked she would say I should have shown initiative. I gave up

I’m the “needy” one - we’re both learning how adhd and the corporate world can work. I need clear instruction as my initiative can give me 500 scenarios without guidance or an example to work from

I needed this! My team works independently and I need them to take ownership of their work. So this is really good advice.

I worked as an apprentice for 5 months, I’m a very confident person natuarally and I would say I do have very good initiative. But when a manager makes you feel like everything you do isn’t good (1)

I have found I ask to make sure I’m doing right job but then when I do use my initiative my manager would explode and say I should have gone through her.

i worked as a graphic design intern for 6 months, and my direct SV was super passive aggressive - my confidence took a spiral for a long time and my work quality did NOT improve at all...

I think the response is dependent on whether this is happening for the umpteenth time as the first part suggests.

I have this right now. A team member with learned or fake incompetence. It’s almost enfuriating and seems like he just doesn’t want to work.
