It’s the struggle we all face! As much as us archivists like to pretend we have it all figured out, that everything has its own place and everything is labelled correctly, that is often not the case. The truth with many archives is that they are buried in a backlog of material that they often don’t have the time or staff necessary to process all of this material. I remember from a tour of the National Archives that they are expecting the size of their collection to double within the next ten years, just from paper records alone. This backlog often then raises a question, how do archivists find items for their users? If we’re lucky, it’s on the catalogue and we can bring it out right away. But if we’re unlucky then the archivist may end up having to trawl through the material to see if there’s anything that could best suit the users enquiry! I remember searching through land deeds that hadn’t been catalogued looking for any records related to a town within that county. It’s often a time consuming process, but it is quite fun getting to search through all this material. I can’t help but feel like a wizard, digging through my scrolls looking for the right spell! But us archivists will continue to catalogue this endless pile of material, and create locations lists so that these records can always be found quickly. #history #archives #archivist #archivists #recordsmanagement #records #catalogue #cataloguing #locationlists #meme #historymeme #archivememe #archivesandrecordsmanagement
