The Dutch version is the real and only version. The American version changed the ending like they always do and messed it up. I expect Kubrick was referring to the Dutch version.

Genuinely never been so underwhelmed by a film. Slow doesn’t even cover it. I’m still waiting to be scared. This isn’t even a thriller at best.
