I really don't disagree but A LOT of jobs will auto filter people without some kind of certification. You can't make use of an impressive portfolio if you can't get an interview.

I've been in this data management job doing STATA and MATLAB for 4 years but every job post says "4 years of experience in SQL" I know it but I don't know advanced stuff and my work isn't helping. I have a master's in data analytics too yet I keep getting rejected

lots of the senior level postings are requiring tons of additional skills now: e.g. python, azure/aws, etc etc

I think the certificates come down to the employer. Some employers really care, some don’t. Just depends on the company you want to work for.
