If Neji dies during the Sasuke Retrieval Arc, it also messes with Suna's standing with Konoha. This mission is their one chance to prove they don't work with Orochimaru anymore, it has to go flawless.

I think the annual result would still be the same, I love neji, he really dosent impact the rest of Naruto story after the tournament, or before the great ninja war before dies.

It wasn’t just Neji it was apparently meant to be everyone but Naruto and Shikamaru. That’s why the others all barely have roles for a while cause there wasn’t any plan for them

I don't think it changes the opinion of the village or Naruto. Shikamaru and Choji are also more important to the village than Neji. It just strengthens Narutos Talk No Jutsu.
