@thatsleepdoc: This amazing resource was created by @_tomvaillant, a video and visual journalist. Amazing visuals. But wait? What about Romanian orphanages and learned helplessness, or polywoly nerve theory, etc etc. There are many many theoretical arguments. And much of the “science” presented against sleep training is just that… theoretical or extrapolated from situations that don’t apply to sleep training. The website lists the theoretical stuff too and breaks it down well. Cortisol you say? I’ll break that down in a future video. You may be surprised. Remember, it’s just an option. Do you have to sleep train? Of course not. Research shows clear short and medium term benefits. But long term, 5-6 years out, you can’t distinguish those that were sleep trained from those that weren’t. This applies to sleep, but also many other measures of well being.

And to note: sleep training/CIO has not been shown to impact attachment, either!

Thank you. I’ve seen IG comments likening sleep training to abuse and it made me question everything 😭 but my baby thrives with it.

Sleep training was the best decision as parents for us! We reaped so many benefits and even now. Traveling is so much easier!

Thank you for this!! I work with families around the world that feel so conflicted and then have their lives changed for the better with sleep work. This is an amazing resource and post

I bought and read (and appreciated) your book! However, you state that the methods you detailed should be used as early as 6mos. How do we handle the 4mo sleep regression? That was why I read it 😭😴

Oh my gosh I needed to see this. I have a boy and a girl who both eventually needed CIO. The boy was literally not sleeping for more than a half hour at a time when he was 5 mos.

we didn't do CIO but we did do training/work for independent sleep. it's worked so well for our family and I'm glad we did it. my kid clearly has a secure attachment and sleeps great 💗

Has the science track long term impacts though? Or just short term?

I 100% advocate for families doing what works best for the family, and worry about the internet running with this as “sleep training is better than not ST”rather than sleep training is safe.

To my understanding the challenge is that the research is mostly parent reporting, very little has been done monitoring the babies themselves. So conclusions from that research aren’t a full picture

As a twin mom that works a full time job sleep training was the only thing helping keep my sanity. It was very easy to transition to toddlers and nap times are relatively easy.

my baby seems to cry for 5-15 minutes before almost EVERY nap, and then falls asleep and wakes up happy. Is this normal? Any cause for concern? She is 6mo and has been doing this since 3mo

Thoughts on co-sleeping with exclusively BF baby following safe sleep 7? My 4 month old only awakens 3 times a night and falls back asleep within a minute of being latched.
