Vice President Kamala Harris called Tuesday’s off-year elections “a good night for democracy,” saying the American people made clear they are “prepared to stand for freedom.” Democrats took control of the Virginia General Assembly, maintaining their majority in the state’s senate while flipping the House of Delegates. Abortion was the biggest issue in the races, with Virginia being the only southern state to not enact new abortion restrictions in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Many of the Republican candidates in competitive districts endorsed Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s (R-VA) proposed 15-week abortion ban with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother. Ohioans also voted overwhelmingly, 56% to 43%, to approve a ballot measure that enshrines the right to an abortion in the state’s constitution. “I think voters have been clear, regardless of whether they’re in a so-called red or blue state, that one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree that government should not be telling a woman what to do with her body,” the vice president told reporters Wednesday outside the White House. Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear also secured a second term in the red state of Kentucky. The strong showing for Democrats provides some relief to party officials amid a slew of recent 2024 polls showing President Biden trailing former President Trump in key swing states. “The president and I have a lot of work to do to earn our reelection,” Vice President Harris said. “But I am confident that we’re going to win.” #vicepresident #kamalaharris #kamala #election2023 #abortion #abortionrights #cspan
