According to court documents, the timeline began on Sunday, July 26, when family members became worried after they were unable to reach 69-year-old Gregory Dolnics. Investigators say that whenever relatives asked Serena Dolnics if they could speak with her father, she made unusual statements instead of putting him on the phone. As concern grew, Serena’s boyfriend reportedly went to the home to check on her. According to investigators, he found Serena covered in blood and immediately contacted Gregory’s family, saying he feared she might harm herself. At approximately 8:00 p.m., deputies with the Porter County Sheriff’s Office responded to the rural Morgan Township home for a welfare check. After receiving no response, they forced entry into the residence. According to the probable cause affidavit, deputies found Gregory Dolnics deceased inside the home with multiple sharp-force injuries to his head, face, neck, and hands. Investigators also say they recovered several knives from inside the residence. The allegation that has shocked people across the country is what investigators say they discovered next. According to the charging documents, Gregory’s heart had been removed from his body and placed on his abdomen. That allegation is part of the criminal case and has not been proven in court. Investigators say Serena Dolnics was found inside a bedroom with blood on her clothing, legs, and feet. Court records state she had cuts on her hands. According to investigators, Serena told officers the injuries came from gardening tools and denied seeing her father injured. The affidavit also states that medical staff believed the injuries appeared more consistent with a knife slipping during use. The Porter County Coroner later ruled Gregory Dolnics’ death a homicide caused by multiple sharp-force injuries. Serena Dolnics has been charged with murder, has pleaded not guilty, and remains held without bond as the case moves through the Indiana court system.
