My response to “I don’t get it” is “do you have a question?”

Learned helplessness is so 2010. Now it is weaponized incompetence. Reinforced by districts pushing 70’s and punishing those who push back. Parents are super okay with a 70. I mean, they passed, right

You are not wrong. “I don’t get this” “what don’t you get” waves hands over paper “all of this” “okay were you listening when we did the example?” “No”. 🤦♀️

Amen! I won’t help unless I see effort. Don’t tell me “I don’t get it” my response is “what don’t you get”

No this is so real. Kids will come up to me to ask what to do with a piece of trash they found on their desk.

THIS. Problem solving skills are becoming nonexistent. Everyone I work with knows I will wait a student out. You show me effort, I’m your biggest fan, otherwise we’re both going to look lost 🤷🏼♀️

another strategy I've found helpful is always responding to their helplessness with a question. "I can't find the answer" gets a "where all have you looked?" etc

Psych teacher here. I read a recent article that suggested learned helplessness is the default, and perseverance is the learned behavior.

“Mrs. What do I do next?” Did you read the INSTRUCTIONS? “Well, no but…” then WHY are you asking me to REPEAT myself. I GAVE the instructions!

My students hate when I say “I don’t know, figure it out.” My 8th graders are doing a small project and need citations for their research. They learned how to do this last year.

My response has been, “I want to see you struggle.” because the lesson they figure out on their own are the lessons they remember.

Need more teachers like you. Caring for them is not holding their hand and making it easy. I don’t handhold. I tell them that on day one. Raise the bar!!

High school teacher here. Had kids ask me on day 1: "Will you just do it for me?" Like....what?

I had to find a nice, constructive way to say "This student has major learned helplessness because of babying from home" on report cards, and it's an insane epidemic

It starts when they’re toddlers. My daycare kidsyoung as age 2 put on their own shoes, jackets etc. some of them get mad & say they can’t but I make sure to let them try. I will help after they tried.

I had to implement a 10 minute rule - they have to try the assignment on their own for 10 min before asking me for help.

I was just talking about this to a coworker! I am a resource teacher and the kids I have this year were fed answers by their resource teachers last year.

Yes! I had 2 cry because it was too hard (they just didn’t want to read to find an answer). They just want to be able to choose a multiple choice answer and guess.
