Long-term use is discouraged due to these side effects. Zopiclone (Imovane) is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic. It is commonly prescribed for insomnia. It has a shorter half-life than many benzodiazepines, reducing next-day drowsiness. Though less likely to impair memory or cause cognitive issues, zopiclone can still lead to dependency if used long-term and may cause side effects like a metallic taste or dry mouth. Zolpidem (Ambien) is designed specifically for short-term treatment of insomnia. It is effective at helping patients fall asleep quickly and has a short half-life, minimizing morning grogginess.
