@castlesofscotland: The Callanish Stones in the Outer Hebrides by have enchanted and intrigued visitors for thousands of years. Neolithic people erected the Callanish Stones about 5,000 years ago - before Stonehenge in England. Though the stones served as a hub for ritual activities for at least 2000 years, their exact purpose has been lost to history. However, recent archaeological excavations, holds that the megaliths acted as some sort of astronomical observatory or a celestial calendar. As with many prehistoric creations, the Callanish Stones are rich with legends. One notes that the stones are petrified giants turned into stone and another tale tells of a magic white cow that appeared at the site to save the islanders from starvation. Outlander fans may be particularly interested in the stones as the TV version of the books used the Callanish Stones as inspiration for the fictional Craigh na Dun. Call the Midwife fans may also recognise the site as a location for 2019 Christmas Special. #outlander #Scotland #outerhebrides #beautiful #history #fyp #explore #mystery #travel #outlandertiktok #scottish #discover #foryou #beautifuldestinations
