Early in my career, I had the opportunity to study a group of young MMA fighters, aged 18-25, to examine biomarkers of brain injury. Despite the fighters' youth, they were already showing early signs of neurodegeneration, a condition once colloquially referred to as being "punch drunk." I have mixed feelings about this type of activity. While there is a lot of excitement and energy of MMA as a sport there is a serious risk of severe neurological consequences for its participants.
