Dunscaith Castle was either built or rebuilt by King William, the Lion, in around 1181. The castle gets its name from the legendary warrior maiden Scathach, or Sgathaich, who was said to dwell here. Scathach was a teacher of martial arts, and among her students was the Irish hero Cu Chulainn, who came to Dunscaith to learn the arts of combat. The ruins of Dunscaith lie on the west coast of Sleat, the most southern peninsula on the Isle of Skye. The castle stands on a rock about 40 feet high, some 20 feet from the mainland. There was once a walled bridge connecting the castle to the mainland. The bridge led to a drawbridge, beyond which were stairs leading to the castle. During the 14th century Sleat formed part of the Earldom of Ross and was occupied by the MacLeods of Dunvegan, who held it until it was seized by the MacDonalds a century later, at which time it served as the clan's principal seat on Skye. The power of the MacDonald Lords of the Isles drew the attention of King James IV, who launched an offensive to bring the Lordship under the Scottish crown. James broke the power of the MacDonald lords and seized Dunscaith. After subjugating the MacDonalds, James allowed them to reoccupy Dunscaith. The castle was finally abandoned by the MacDonalds of Sleat, probably in the early 17th century. Since then the buildings have been allowed to deteriorate to their present state. Dunscaith Castle has been scheduled under the Ancient Monuments Acts. #Scotland #castle #history #skye #foryoupage #beauty #royal #explore #travel #scottishtiktok #adventure #gameofthrones #outlander #scottish #fyp #historytime #explorepage #roadtrip #fy
