Guillermo del Toro and Henry Selick are what Tim Burton thinks he is.

This is great takedown of auteur theory more broadly. Directors get too much credit for what is a collaborative effort.

This is why BIG FISH is my favorite Burton film: it’s him stretching himself to grow beyond the boundaries of the impression people have of him.

i think that was disney's call to put his name above the title. they knew his name was more marketable

I had no idea. I definitely associated him with his esthetic more than stories. But I definitely assumed he wrote his features. I look up more by these writers.

was literally talking about this last night after my Beetlejuice 1 rewatch. his visual identity is fantastic but I hate to see the credit get stripped away from the team that makes it possible

Always the weird disconnect between TV and movies because when a TV show is great they always say it’s great writing, when a movie is great they always give the director credit

I agree. When I think of Burton, especially his early work, I think of his directorial style and aesthetic. The stories are incredible but that’s not him 99% of the time. Great video!

I’ve seen people credit him for writing/creating Wednesday. He only agreed to directing some eps after being sent the finished pilot script 😔

Most directors aren’t script writers. They bring the script to life, and very often change lines l, characters or scenes to fit their vision. I thought everyone knew that?

this is so real. as a writer, I’ve got so many stories bouncing around in my head, but actually pulling them out of it and writing them down is SO HARD

Well, Kubrick also adapted other people’s work but he was definitely an auteur

It makes me sad that a lot of people don’t know that Henry Selick directed The Nightmare Before Christmas. Also, a lot of people don’t know who Henry Selick is, and think that his work is directed by Tim Burton.

One of a director’s most important jobs is picking their collaborators. Having the right people around to bring your vision to life is just as important as the vision itself.

That’s an interesting point on him not being an auteur! We studied him for a Film Auteur class I took at UT, but I didn’t feel his beautiful visuals necessarily informed the story, but rather the tone

Thank you. I’ve always thought he was more of a graphic artist. His designs and drawings are amazing and fun.
