Replying to @kmp.beautyinc I saw this comment under one of my Bomba videos and it made me think about something much bigger than Puerto Rico. Throughout the Americas, African spirituality was demonized by colonial societies as part of the effort to suppress African traditions and convert people to Christianity. And what’s interesting is that African people didn’t just stop being African because they were forced into a new religion. They adapted, preserved, blended, and carried traditions forward in ways that still exist today. And honestly, living here has made me think about my own family. There are things my grandfather did that I saw growing up but never really understood. Now, the more I learn about African diasporic traditions, the more I find myself wondering: How much of our cultural memory survived right in front of us… and we just didn’t know how to recognize it? Maybe the question isn’t just, “Why do people see this as demonic?” Maybe we should also ask: Who taught us to see it that way? #BombaPuertorriqueña #bombapuertorico #afropuertorican #AfricanDiaspora #puertoricoculture
