It’s the algebraic flotsam to which we cling.  And if you like it that way, well, look away now, because the mathematician Kurt #Gödel might be about to snatch even that away. His incompleteness theorem shook the foundations of the mathematical universe, effectively doing away with those foundations altogether.  To understand how, we have to understand ‘axioms,’ which are those statements which we accept before we go about doing maths. They're like the letters that we use to form words. For example, A plus B equals b plus A is an axiom. But so too are the operators of maths, like addition or division. #Axioms are the building blocks of #mathematics , but they can't actually be proven. They're true because they work and seem true all of the time.  Imagine all of mathematics as a huge sack containing all of the things that mathematics can do. Kurt Gödel proved two things. First, that within this sack there are some things which cannot be proven or disproven. And second, that mathematics, on its own, cannot prove its own axioms. Essentially, it's a problem of self-reference.  Some people misrepresented Gödel to claim that he showed that maths is groundless or that truth is meaningless. But Gödel’s point was subtler. He was saying that there are some truths which don't need proof. It might seem counterintuitive, but Gödel’s incompleteness theorem opens up a whole new way to understand certainty. #philosophy #postmodernism #thinking #learning
