Tbh I don’t think this is always a difference in neurotypes. Many people autistic or not, & esp older gens, have been socialized to just answer “I’m fine” rather than talking about their problems

I understand others tone, but I don’t ever know what my own tone sounds like. My husband will say I sound aggressive and mean but I don’t hear it in myself. But I hear it in others. It’s so hard.

when I was a kid I was like "I understand sarcasm perfectly, I don't have trouble with it at all" and then when I got a little older I realized that people could be sarcastic without doing a funny

As a theatre kid I got really good at using tone indicators in my speech but still struggle to interpret correctly in others especially if not fone in a dramatic way.

In my experience autistic people "understand tone" just fine. They just don't want to be treated like a lesser being for needing a bit of clarification or interacting with tone in novel ways.
