As a Black man who writes stories about young Black boys, I knew it was a risk to put a dark-skinned Black boy alone on the cover of a YA fantasy novel. But I remember signing my book deal and telling my publishers: My one non-negotiable was that a Black boy be front and center, looking powerful. Because in Young Adult fiction, Black boys are too often side characters… or completely nonexistent. And that silence speaks louder than we realize.
