@billabongsanctuary: Hope, one of our Southern Cassowaries, plays a vital role in the Wet Tropics ecosystem. Renowned for their seed dispersal, cassowaries help distribute the seeds of over 100 different plant species. By swallowing large fruits whole and spreading seeds through their droppings, cassowaries help regenerate our rainforests, making their presence in the wild absolutely essential. Despite their importance, Southern Cassowaries are under threat with less than 4,000 left in the wild. Threatened due to habitat loss from urban expansion, road accidents, and conflicts with humans has left their future uncertain. Invasive species like dogs and pigs also threatened their nest and the young birds. At Billabong Sanctuary, we are committed to ensuring that cassowaries, like Hope, have a fighting chance. Through education and our national breeding program, we hope to inspire action and highlight the need to protect their remaining habitats.
