Mystery Drones Swarmed a US Base for 17 Days, The Pentagon Is Stumped #usa #america A fleet of drones swarmed a US military base for 17 straight days in December, and no one knows who’s behind it. And not just any base, it’s Langley Air Force Base. “Every night, 45 minutes after sunset - the show begins” said General Mark Kelly, the base’s commander. They estimated that the drones were 20 feet long and flying at 100 miles an hour. They supposedly followed each other one by one and sounded like a parade of lawn mowers. General Kelly jokingly called it “Close Encounters at Langley”. They deployed a wealth of resources to catch them but they’d vanish into the night. The Pentagon is stumped, some think it’s clever hobbyists, others think it’s Russia and China. Local police in Virginia attempted to crack the mystery by chasing the drones on foot and by car. They eventually gave up. This went all the way to President Biden who found out about it in the Situation Room. Some US officials don’t believe it’s hobbyists because the drones don’t use the usual frequency off-the-shelf drones use but also because the operation is too complex. The drones flew in a pattern: One or two fixed-wing drones positioned more than 100 feet in the air and smaller quadcopters, the size of 20-pound commercial drones, often below and flying slower. Each night at 6pm, they’d come from the north and continue south, then they’d repeat that until midnight and disappear. And so the White House conducted brainstorming sessions on how to stop the drones. They said “What if we used electronic jamming?” - it was ruled out because it could disrupt 911 and wifi networks. Direct energy weapons were suggested but were deemed too high risk for commercial aircraft in December. Someone even suggested the coast guard shoot nets into the air to capture the drones but it was ruled out because drones were too fast. Langley asked the Navy to watch the drones, but even they failed and their radar couldn’t pick it up. The base was close to giving up, they canceled all night time training in fear of colliding with the drones and they moved the F-22s to a different base. At one point, a ship was found floating off the coast of Virginia but when it was raided, they found nothing. Then on December 23rd, the drones stopped coming. It wasn’t until January that they found a potential clue.. Or did they? A Chinese national going to school here had gotten his drone stuck in a tree 11 miles from Langley. A neighbor called Newport News Police, which just to clarify - Newport News is the name of the city. The man couldn’t free the drone so he took off, got on a train to DC, flew to Oakland, and booked a one way ticket to China. The drone fell just hours later. The FBI obtained it and found he was taking pictures of Navy ships in dry dock at around midnight. The Feds then arrested the man before he could fly to China. He said he was just a ship enthusiast, and on vacation. So he was flying drones at night for fun. But investigators weren’t convinced but they also couldn’t find any connection to the Chinese government or the fleet of drones that flew over Langley. They charged him with unlawfully taking photos of classified naval installations and he pled guilty and is now serving a 6 month sentence. The judge in his case doesn’t believe his story, saying that there’s significant holes. His attorneys say that if he was a foreign agent, he’d be the worst spy ever.
