LOOK WELL: Physical health and movement I dealt with chronic pain in my back for over 10 years. Some days I couldn’t pick up my kids, walk to the park with them, or even get myself off the couch. The pain held me back in a lot of ways, and truthfully really affected my mental health and mood. But over the last 10 years or so I’ve learned a lot about how my body communicates to me. Sometimes the pain and stiffness means it’s time to rest. Other times the pain and stiffness means it’s been too long since I’ve moved. Since entering my 40s I’ve found the latter to be more true. My kids sleep through the night now, I have a steady pulse on my stress levels, and I’m knowledgeable about what food triggers inflammation in my body. So when those things are in check and I’m dealing with pain I *know* it’s time to move. And while the first 5-10 minutes bring a lot of sensations 🙃 it keeps the chronic, persistent pain at bay for the rest of the day. Each day becomes a reset and motivation for me to get going so the day runs the best it can. Sure there are still days when it’s best for me to just recoup and rest, but I still choose gentle movement like yoga 🧘🏽 or contrast therapy ♨️🧊, but my default now is to get my body moving in joyful, loving, but challenging ways and I feel better for it 🙌🏼. Quite the dichotomy. Have you found it to be the same way for you? 👉🏼 And do I need to do a series on what I do for movement that encourages health aging? How about the ways I’ve found to communicate with my body around food and my inflammatory response to it? Let me know what you’d like to learn about next!
