Yes!! I think about personal responsibly to recreate safely a LOT. I use my InReach primarily as a communication tool w friends/fam, to track my location, and think of SOS as 1 tool in an emergency.

Up here in W WA the clouds and rain can last for days, preventing helicopters from flying. SAR volunteers travel slower than UL hikers because they take lots of heavy rescue gear.

this x1000. as someone who has friends who perished because sar couldn't rescue them. ppl don't realize how hard and unreliable rescue really is. it only works in the best case scenario

Our SAR team (the beautiful people they were) took 6 hours to mobilize. And we had up hike back 7 miles 🙃

I think it's also important to note that they require a clear view of the sky to work reliably for certain features so if you're in a cave or covered by dense forest it may not work the best/v fast :/

Yep, so true. and iPhones are starting to have satellite SOS features built in.. i hope the “false sense of comfort” doesn’t get worse with that technology available on everyone’s phones

i was in the jasper backcountry when the fire broke out. during the lightning storm and after we repeatedly asked for weather updates… never once did the inreach ever let us know that the entire town

absolutely true. and in BC forests hitting a satellite can sometimes be impossible. I used mine for another hiker I came across in a trail and had to hike to a clearing before the messages would go

I still don't have one, every time I consider getting one I realize a clearly written note in my car and left with my roommate has about the same response time as pushing the button for most outings

I think abt this a lot since I often keep mine turned off for longer backpacking trips to conserve battery. If something incapacitated me before I could turn it on to use the SOS I'd be cooked

I saw a fb post from a local hiking page about a petition for gates/hours to go up on some trails. Comments were full of people arguing that ‘S&R chooses that job for the adrenalin so who cares’ 🙃

People are also just so careless. literally saw a video on here 2 people did like 13 miles off trail, crossing a glacier with 0 gear, like turn around??? teehee oopsie oh well keep going

i was recently a part of an unofficial rescue. my party found him in a rough state but not quite bad enough to call sar. and holy shit getting this guy 8 miles down a well established trail took AGES.
