In 1924, at the age of 14, he was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, which had been founded that same year. In addition to courses in composition (with Rosario Scalero) and piano, he also attended courses in singing and conducting (with Fritz Reiner). After graduating in 1934, he devoted himself entirely to composing. He began his fame with the 1933 overture The School for Scandal, based on Richard Sheridan's play of the same name, and with the 1935 Music for a Scene from Shelley, inspired by poet Percy Bysshe Shelley's Prometheus Unbound. In 1936 he composed his String Quartet in B minor and, following the advice of Arturo Toscanini, he transcribed the second movement for string orchestra, giving it the name Adagio for strings. In 1938 the piece was performed by the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Toscanini and this gave Barber great popularity. Later the piece became an Agnus Dei for mixed choir.
