Truth Matters: Mr McKenzie Exposes the Truth About Municipal Corporation Funding in Jamaica 🇯🇲 | Where the Money Really Comes From The Facts About Municipal Corporation Revenue & Hurricane Recovery. 🇯🇲 Where does Jamaica's Municipal Corporation money really come from? Who pays for roads, garbage collection, councillors, beautification, and community services? Speaking at the Jamaica Labour Party's Area Council One "Truth Matters" Public Meeting, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, CD, MP, Minister of Local Government and Community Development, explained how Jamaica's Municipal Corporations are funded and responded to what he described as misinformation surrounding local government financing. During his presentation, Minister McKenzie outlined the various revenue streams available to Municipal Corporations and explained the respective roles of local government and central government in funding public services. In this video, you'll discover: 👉 How property tax revenue helps finance Municipal Corporations, including the salaries of councillors and municipal staff. 👉 Why Municipal Corporations are not solely dependent on central government funding, but also generate income through approximately 20 own-source revenue streams, including building approvals, trade licences, market fees, cemeteries, parking fees, advertising permits, and other local government charges. 👉 Minister McKenzie's statement that more than JMD $64 billion was generated through building approval activity in 2025, highlighting the scale of development taking place across Jamaica. 👉 His explanation that the Government provides additional financial support beyond local revenues, including funding for the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), road maintenance, disaster recovery, and other community services. 👉 Funding allocated to councillors for community beautification projects and neighbourhood improvements. 👉 The Government's investment in repairing local roads and supporting Municipal Corporations with infrastructure development. 👉 How the Government has provided additional resources for drain cleaning, drought mitigation, and emergency water trucking to communities facing water shortages. Hurricane Recovery & Community Support Minister McKenzie also provided updates on the Government's recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa, including: ✅ Rental assistance for 60 displaced families through the Social Development Commission (SDC). ✅ Ongoing support for residents still living in emergency shelters. ✅ Government-funded meals for over 100 persons still being affected by the hurricane. ✅ Continued rebuilding and recovery assistance for impacted communities. He also reflected on measures introduced since 2016 to strengthen local government, including additional support provided to councillors for community development initiatives.
